Memorial Scholarship

Professor Irene Canel-Petersen is a true example of devotion and commitment to Miami Dade College. As an immigrant from Cuba, Professor Canel-Petersen always credited her education as the gateway to all the opportunities that came her way.

In 1972, Professor Canel graduated from Miami Dade College, North Campus, and transferred to FIU where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Prof. Canel-Petersen returned to Miami Dade College as a grant writer and worked in the media department. In 1990, she earned her master’s degree in Communication Studies from the University of Miami and started to teach Speech Communication courses at the college. In 2016, she retired and returned as an adjunct instructor. May she always be a role model to all of us at MDC.
