Efrain Morciego Reyes Foundation Memorial Scholarship

Overview

The Efraín Morciego Reyes Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to and meant to honor those students that pursue a career in Spanish literature, in hopes of never letting this beautiful field of study and language be forgotten. Efraín Morciego Reyes was born on April 24th, 1950, in Camagüey, Cuba and passed away on August 26th, of 2020 in Havana, Cuba after a lifelong battle with a chronic illness. Born a Cuban peasant, in poverty, and with limited access to proper education, he became a self-taught writer, poet, and artist at a very young age, immersing himself in world culture and becoming one of the best writers of his generation. It was said “he stamped with his name every minute he was given”.

In his early life, he pursued his literary studies at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute of Moscow in 1982. During his literary legacy, he focused on writing about the land and earth in his poetry but expanded to and experimented with all genres including Poetry, Novels, Essays, and Journalism. His most recognized published books were Rústicas y Rupestres (tenths) 1978, Provisiones de la memoria (poetry) 1986, El Monte de las Cien Caballerías (novel) 1989, and El Crimen de Cortaderas (testimony) 1982. The last book he published before passing away was Poemas Escritos en la Habana (Poetry) 2020. En honor a su legado, esta beca ayudará a muchos estudiantes fluentes en español y amantes de las letras a realizar sus sueños.
